Dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, is a common condition. It occurs with a dry or inflamed scalp. The scalp may be itchy and there may be white or yellow flakes, which can be embarrassing.
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus Web site, dandruff may be caused by an overproduction of oil or by a yeast called malessizia. Factors that could bring about dandruff, or make it worse, are stress, fatigue, hot, windy or cold weather, oily skin, improper hygiene and skin disorders.
There are special shampoos to treat dandruff but there's also natural dandruff control.
Types
Natural dandruff control includes eating a healthy diet, getting enough vitamins, managing stress and taking certain supplements. In addition to shampooing, the Mayo Clinic also recommends cutting back on styling products. Styling products can buildup in the hair and on the scalp, causing irritation.
Features
The Mayo Clinic says a "diet that provides enough zinc, B vitamins and certain types of fats may help prevent dandruff." Exposure to sunlight may help control dandruff.
In "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," Phyllis A. Balch recommends a diet of 50 to 75 percent raw foods and sour products such as yogurt. She recommends avoiding fried foods, sugar, flour, dairy products, chocolate, seafood and nuts. She also suggests rinsing hair with vinegar and water instead of just plain water after shampooing.
Balch says essential fatty acids found in salmon and flaxseed help relieve itching and scalp inflammation. Selenium can control a dry scalp. Vitamin B complex is important for healthy skin and hair. Vitamin A helps prevent dry skin and heal tissue. Vitamin C helps prevent tissue damage to the scalp and helps heal the irritated area.
Balch also recommends aloe vera because it's a powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent. It can be put directly on the scalp.
Considerations
Balch says those with dandruff could also take dandelion, goldenseal and red clover supplements, but cautions against using goldenseal on a daily basis for longer than a week. It can be dangerous if you have heart disease, glaucoma or diabetes.
Try to use all-natural shampoos without harsh chemicals or greasy ingredients. Balch also suggests massaging the scalp before washing it.
Benefits
Benefits of natural dandruff control include less flakes and less embarrassment, which leads to higher self-esteem and confidence in social situations.
Prevention/Solution
According to MedlinePlus, you can prevent dandruff or lessen its severity by lowering risk factors, managing stress and taking care of your skin.
