Gadolinium is a contrast material used during magnetic resonant imaging, MRI. Not all MRIs require the use of contrast material and other options exist. However, these options have higher potential for allergic reaction. Gadolinium has a low possibility of causing an allergic reaction, such as itching and rash. However, some patients may feel some itching or have watery eyes after its use. If this is the case, use some basic techniques to relieve the gadolinium rash and itch.
Step 1
Let the medical staff know that you are experiencing itching and rash. If you're in the hospital, the staff can monitor your condition and determine how severe a reaction you are having. If you're at home, contact the medical imaging provider or your physician to discuss your condition and get their advice.
Step 2
Apply a topical antihistamine cream if the site of the injection is the source of the itching and rash. Topical antihistamines are available at drug and grocery stores.
Step 3
Take an antihistamine pill to relieve an all-over itch and rash response. Histamine reactions cause your body to attack itself, causing swelling, itching and watery eyes. Antihistamines are available at drugstores and supermarkets.
Step 4
Use a cool compress to relieve the itching and rash if the site is localized and you prefer to avoid medication. A moistened washcloth at the injection site can cool the itch and soothe the rash.
