Fibroid tumors are abnormal, but not cancerous, growths that typically form in a woman's uterus. Fibroid tumors have many names, including fibromyoma, uterine fibroids, leiomyomata, myoma and leiomyoma. It's not understood what causes these fibrous growths to form, but they may be related to excess estrogen. Fibroid tumors can vary greatly in size, but they don't typically result in pain or other symptoms.
Abnormal Menstruation
One of the most common symptoms of fibroid tumors is heavier menstruation. Large fibroid tumors may also cause periods to last longer than usual or to occur more often. Women may also experience more severe menstrual cramping and suffer from anemia as a result of heavy periods.
Pain and Discomfort
Large fibroid tumors may cause abdominal pain, or even pain in the lower back or the legs. Some women also find that sexual intercourse is painful because of fibroid tumors. The abdominal area may feel tight or full of pressure, and women may experience excessive gas. Excess pressure from the fibroid tumor may also be exerted on the rectum, leading to constipation.
Other Problems
Women may need to urinate more often because of the pressure of a fibroid tumor. Urination may also be more difficult. Some women may notice swelling of the abdominal area and uterus. Fibroid tumors may also result in infertility and miscarriage of a pregnancy.
