Signs & Symptoms of Depression in Teenagers

Depression is an intense feeling of sadness or doom. Each year, approximately one in every eight teens will become depressed. Knowing the signs and symptoms enables you to watch out for teen depression.

Mental

Loss of concentration and an inability to make up her mind are signs of depression in a teen. This may be accompanied by a feeling of helplessness or hopelessness.

Physical

Lack of energy is a sign of teen depression. Self mutilation, such as cutting, is another sign of teen depression. This symptom should be treated immediately.

Mood

A teen who is depressed may seem irritated, feel misunderstood and focus on the negative side of every situation. Focusing on death, either her own or the death of loved ones, is a common sign of depression in a teenager. Should her thoughts turn to suicide or homicide, immediate mental health treatment is needed.

School

A depressed teen may refuse to go to school. If she does go to school, her grades may fall or she may begin to get into trouble.

Health

Pretending to be sick is a common sign of depression in a teenager. In some cases, the teen may develop insomnia.

Social

A lack of interest in activities that he once enjoyed is a sign of depression in a teen. He may not want to spend time with friends and family and may enjoy being alone.
