A nose may become swollen for a variety of reasons, including nasal surgery or a contact injury. Whatever the cause of your swollen nose, the treatment methods remain the same. The ultimate goal is to relieve pain, pressure and discomfort in the nasal region so you can resume your normal schedule. Consult your physician if you experience severe pain or if the nasal swelling spreads to other areas of your face and body.

Step 1

Fill a small, sealable plastic bag with ice and seal it. Rap the ice-filled bag in a medium sized towel. This keeps the ice from becoming too cold for your skin.

Step 2

Elevate your head to keep blood from settling in your facial region. Increased blood flow to the face and nose can increase sensitivity and prevent the swelling from going down.

Step 3

Place the ice on your nose, but refrain from applying pressure. According to the New York University Department of Pediatrics, you should keep the ice pack on your swollen nose for 15 to 20 minutes at least two times a day.

Step 4

Repeat the process until the pain subsides and swelling goes down.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid blowing your nose for at least a week for severe injuries or post-operation, says the University of Michigan Health System. Wash your face gently. Do not apply pressure to your swollen nose, as this may cause excess pain and increase swelling.
  • Remain elevated as often as you can.

Things You'll Need
