Itraconazole is an anti-fungal medication that is marketed in the United States under the brand name Sporanox. The drug is used primarily to treat fungal infections of the lung but may also be prescribed for nail infections. Itraconazole is taken orally, several times a day with meals. Treatment usually spans several months. Itraconazole may cause side effects in some people, and some of the effects can be very serious. People who experience these side effects should contact their doctor immediately.
Heart Failure
Itraconazole comes with an "important warning," as stated on the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) description of the drug. Taking itraconazole can cause congestive heart failure in some patients. People who already have heart problems or suffer from liver, kidney or lung disease should discuss their health with a medical care provider before taking itraconazole. People taking Propulsid, Tikosyn, Orap or quinidine medications have a higher-than-normal risk of experiencing heart arrhythmia while taking itraconazole and should not use this medication. Symptoms that should be checked out immediately include shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, weakness, extreme fatigue and swelling of the lower extremities.
Gastrointestinal Distress
Diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, stomach cramping, nausea and vomiting are all among the gastrointestinal side effects that could occur while taking itraconazole. The Mayo Clinic classifies these side effects as "less common" but urges patients who experience these side effects to contact a physician if they do not improve over the course of treatment.
Mouth Sores
People who take itraconazole may develop mouth sores as a result of the medication. Sores may be inside or outside the mouth and may accompany sore gums that are prone to bleeding. Dry mouth may also be a side effect of the medication and might contribute to the development of mouth sores.
Change in Urinary Habits
Changes in bathroom habits can be potentially serious side effects associated with the use of itraconazole. Urination can become difficult and painful, according to the NIH. Urine may darken in color, while stools may become abnormally pale.
Mood Changes
Nervousness, depression and a decrease of libido may all result from the use of itraconazole. These side effects are not among the most common seen in patients taking the anti-fungal medication but may become worrisome if they persist. Contact a doctor if mood changes worsen during the course of treatment.
Pain
Muscle pain and headaches can occur in itraconazole users. Drowsiness may accompany these conditions and are among the "more common" set of symptoms associated with the medication, according to the Mayo Clinic.
