Maintain your skin to stay young, healthy and vital. Although no one can have perfect skin, you can take care of it to eliminate or reduce imperfections. According to the "Cosmopolitan" website, many factors -- including your monthly cycle, the weather, your diet, birth-control pills and how you cleanse your face -- affect how your skin appears. There are also cosmetics to disguise imperfections and give the appearance of flawless skin, but it's always a good idea to start with a healthy palette before applying makeup.

Step 1

Eat healthy foods that contain vitamins and other nutrients that nourish your skin cells. Fish and other foods with omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation that can cause breakouts and wrinkles. Vegetables and fruits provide vitamins and minerals to provide a healthy glow.

Step 2

Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily. Water is essential to keep the skin moist and smooth. It also helps flush toxins from your pores.

Step 3

Wash your skin regularly. Remove makeup every night before you go to bed. Wash your face in the morning to remove oils that have come to the surface of your skin while you sleep. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using skin-care products designed specifically for the area you are washing. Avoid using deodorant soaps on the face. Instead, select facial cleansers specifically formulated to remove makeup and oils.

Step 4

Tone your skin with a toning formula applied with a cotton ball. This helps close the pores, giving your skin a smoother appearance.

Step 5

Use an oil-free moisturizer to replenish the moisture in your skin. Look for lotions and facial moisturizing creams that are free from unnecessary perfumes and additives. According to the Mayo Clinic website, moisturizers should seal your skin to keep moisture from escaping.

Step 6

Wear sunscreen. Get in the habit of slathering sunscreen on all exposed skin before you leave the house each day. If you are outdoors longer than a couple of hours, reapply it throughout the day to prevent sun damage that can cause skin cancer, discoloration and wrinkles.

Step 7

Apply makeup that suits your skin type. Cosmetics companies manufacture products for oily, dry and combination skin. Only apply makeup to clean, dry skin.

Step 8

Clear up all pimples, acne and other skin problems by using products that are specifically designed for whatever problems you are experiencing. According to "Seventeen," products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help get rid of pimples.

Step 9

Avoid foods and drinks that cause your face to redden. Alcoholic beverages, foods with MSG and processed foods are often the culprits because they cause the blood vessels in your face and neck area to dilate, giving your skin a ruddy appearance.
