Physical and emotional factors can cause the body to lose weight. Decreased body fluid, decreased muscle mass, anxiety and depression, certain medications, over-exercising, dieting and physical illness all can contribute to weight loss. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of weight loss and to know when to seek professional advice, especially when the weight loss is unintentional.

Numbers Start To Drop

Although it is not a perfect measure, body mass index is fairly accurate in determining how much fat the body contains. A healthy BMI for adults ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. A result that falls below 18.5 is considered underweight, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. A BMI can be calculated by dividing body weight in lbs. by height in inches squared and multiplying that amount by 703. Always consult a health professional for help with specific medical questions.

Mood Changes

It is normal to experience a range of negative feelings from time to time, but if mood swings start to interfere with everyday life, then an underlying cause like weight loss could be the culprit. As the body loses weight, sugars drop and energy stores become depleted. This is especially true during rapid weight loss from dieting and excessive exercising. Decrease in energy can result in sleepiness and irritability. Any time you recognize severe mood swings, make note of eating habits. It could be that your body just isn't getting enough of what it needs.

Body Shape

The body tends to store calories and fat in the abdomen, sides, thighs, buttocks and under the arms. The body tends to have a flabby appearance in these areas when it's overweight, and clothing may feel tight. As you lose weight, the body's appearance begins to change in the opposite way, and the skin that initially contained the extra fat deposits will start to sag and become wrinkly. The abdomen will look flatter, the arms and thighs smaller and even the face will look thinner.
