Metabolism is the process of converting what you eat and drink into energy. A boosted metabolism burns more calories and may contribute to weight loss. Certain foods and vitamins, such as hot chili peppers, high-protein foods and B vitamins, can increase your metabolism. According to the Mayo Clinic, the impact of your metabolism on weight loss is insignificant when compared to that of diet and exercise. Discuss any changes to your diet with your physician.
Hot Peppers
There are many varieties of chili peppers including jalapeno pepper and cayenne pepper. If you eat one of these hot chili peppers, you may start to sweat shortly afterward. This heat-inducing effect of the hot chili pepper may help you burn calories. According to a 2008 article on the "Science Daily" website, ingesting chili peppers promotes thermogenesis, the process by which cells convert energy into heat, and increases your metabolism.
High-Protein Foods
Choosing high-protein foods can increase your metabolism; according to Lasting-Weight-Loss.com, digesting protein burns more calories than digesting fats or carbohydrates. The site lists wild-caught fish, lean game meats, range-fed beef and organic, free-range poultry and eggs among the best protein foods to speed your metabolism. Although eating protein may have caloric advantages for weight loss, the Mayo Clinic website emphasizes that a healthy diet consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean sources of protein.
B Vitamins
According to Samantha Heller, M.S., R.D., B vitamins, including B6, B12, folate, thiamin and niacin, are essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein as well as energy production. Among foods high in B vitamins are spinach, asparagus, melon, black beans, poultry and eggs, reports Heller. There is not significant scientific evidence to conclude that B vitamins encourage weight loss. Consult your health care provider before taking B vitamin supplements to increase your metabolism.
