If you apply leave-in treatments, gels, hairsprays, glossers or mousses to your hair to control your style, chances are that residue from these products will build up on the ceramic plates of your flat iron. This build-up will not only make the ceramic plates look dirty, it may also affect the flat iron's ability to straighten your hair. A weekly cleaning will help ensure that your ceramic flat iron operates at peak performance when you need it.

Step 1

Switch off the ceramic flat iron and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Allow the ceramic flat iron to cool completely (at least 30 minutes) before cleaning.

Step 2

Dampen a soft cloth with isopropyl alcohol. Rub the soft cloth over the ceramic plates to remove build-up.

Step 3

Saturate a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol to clean the small crevice that runs parallel with each ceramic plate. Repeat the process as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you do not have isopropyl alcohol on hand, use ordinary glass cleaner.
  • Do not use harsh abrasives to clean the ceramic flat iron. Do not submerge the flat iron in water to clean. Do not begin cleaning the ceramic flat iron until it has cooled down. Beginning the cleaning process while the flat iron is still hot can result in severe burns.
