There are literally hundreds of fitness centers across the state of Illinois. Many of them are nationwide chains, but there are some that are locally owned and operated. Some gyms focus on a specific kind of workout, such as martial arts and yoga, some are geared just toward women and others are generic. Chicago
As the first decade of the new millennium waned, there were at least 100 gyms in Chicago, the biggest city in Illinois. Chicago has more gyms that any other city in the state. In fact, the next closest has only seven gyms. The most ubiquitous fitness club chains and their number of gyms are Curves with 31; Bally Total Fitness, 8; Crunch Fitness, 5; and XSport Fitness, 5. A few established independent gyms in the Windy City are Al's Gym, David Barton Gym, Enso Yoga & Martial Arts, and Fitzgerald Martial Arts.
North Illinois
The cities with the most gyms in northern Illinois outside Chicago are Aurora, Naperville and Rockford. In late 2010, Aurora and Rockford each had five fitness clubs. among the 10 total are a Blitz, a Curves, a Ladies Workout Express, a Peak Fitness, a Powerhouse Gym and a World Gym. Naperville had 10 gyms: Bally Total Fitness, Ladies Workout Express, Life Time Fitness, Planet Fitness, Velocity Sports Performance, World Gym, XSport Fitness and three Curves franchises.
East Illinois
The eastern side of Illinois includes state capital Springfield, Peoria and Galesburg. As 2010 was ending, Springfield had the most fitness clubs of the eastern cities, including four Curves gyms and a Powerhouse Gym. There were four fitness clubs each in Peoria and Galesburg, including several Curveses and the Landmark Racquet & Health Club.
West Illinois
The western side of Illinois includes Danville, Decatur and Urbana. Decatur had the most fitness clubs in west Illinois in October 2010, followed by Danville and Urbana. Decatur had four gyms total including two Curves locations, a Fit Pro: Fitness Training Systems and an Image Health & Fitness. Danville had two gyms and Urbana had only one, all of which were Curveses.
South Illinois
Several southern Illinois cities have only one or two fitness club. Alton had two gyms as the millennium's first decade began to fade, Curves and Nautilus Fitness Center. The other two major cities in southern Illinois are Belleville and Granite City. Both cities have only one fitness centers, and each is a Curves.
