Diseases are either communicable or noncommunicable. Communicable diseases are transferable to other people and they are caused by a virus or infection. Noncommunicable diseases on the other hand cannot be spread and they are generally caused from heredity, deficiencies in nutrition or factors involving the environment.

Asthma

The lungs are the area where air is breathed in and exhaled out during respiration. Asthma is a chronic condition where the bronchial wall muscles constrict and cause inflammation in the airway passages. As a result, an excess of mucus is produced. Symptoms of this disease that flare up include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. These symptoms can be triggered when pollutants, pollen and pet dander are breathed in.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that takes place on the skin. Under normal circumstances, the skin forms cells, and they are shed or "sloughed off." With psoriasis, the skin cells grow too fast and they build up on the surface of the skin. This causes red, painful blotches that can become scaly and irritated. There is no known cure for this disease and it can come and go without warning.

Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It takes place in the colon and rectum and it causes sores called "ulcers." Once they develop, puss forms and various symptoms can appear such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, joint pain, weight loss, anemia, fatigue and a loss of bodily fluids.

Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

The thyroid is a gland that sits in the front of the neck and it is about the size of a plum. The main purpose of the thyroid is to produce and circulate hormones through the body that help with metabolism, energy levels and temperature regulation. Hypothyroidism is a condition that causes the thyroid to be underactive and hyperthyroidism causes the thyroid to be overactive. Hypothyroidism symptoms include weight gain, lack of energy and constipation. Hyperthyroidism patients can experience shaking, irritability and weight loss.

Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a condition that causes dementia in older adults. Normal mental abilities become difficult due to a degeneration of brain tissue. In the more severe cases, the individual can contract pneumonia, infections and suffer falls because of her impaired mental state.

Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis. It is caused from a chemical in the body called uric acid. Under normal circumstances, uric acid is flushed from the body when an individual urinates. But if someone suffers from gout, uric acid forms urate crystals and it pools up at his joint locations causing pain, inflammation, stiffness and swelling.
