Fall Lake is located in Northern Minnesota amongst a vast series of waterways, wilderness areas and lakes. Camping in the area is secluded and offers a primitive camping experience. You can spend the day swimming, canoeing or exploring the North Country on foot. Whatever your passion, you will have a scenic and wooded campsite to return to at day's end.
Seasons
Minnesota offers four distinct and scenic seasons and you can explore the state's northern wilderness in any of them. In the winter, you can cross-country ski, or snowshoe around the lake but camping may prove difficult as Fall Lake Campground does not offer winter camping. The campground is open between early May and early October. The warm summer season is your best bet for good weather. Fall camping offers special advantages. As the leaves change in the northern woodlands, the forest becomes an array of multi-colored scenery.
Boundary Waters
Fall Lake sits on the border of the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness, a maze of rivers and lakes lining the northern Minnesota border. From your campsite you can head out on the water and explore the vast, water bound wilderness. The remote nature of the wilderness area means you can spend the entire day exploring the waters without seeing another canoeist or hiker. Because Fall Lake lies on the border of the wilderness area you must have a permit to be on it. You can obtain a day use permit from the self-issue station in Fall Lake campground. For overnight camping in the Boundary Waters, you must have a backcountry permit from the ranger office.
Drive in Camping
Fall Lake Campground has drive-in campsites large enough to accommodate most RVs and camping trailers. Sites feature fire rings, tent pads and picnic tables. Community amenities include garbage containers, water faucets, and an indoor restroom facility. Electricity is offered at several of the campgrounds 64 sites. To ensure a site with electricity, you can make a reservation up to six months prior to your visit.
Backcountry Camping
Though no designated backcountry campsites are located around Fall Lake, you are permitted to set up a dispersed campsite in areas of the Superior National Forest. When backcountry camping in the forest you may only camp out do site from trails, roads, designated campgrounds and other developed areas. You may also camp in the backcountry of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, though there are more regulations for camping here.
Considerations
Fall Lake campground is a modern facility with road access, restrooms and water. The wilderness surrounding the campground, however, lacks these convenient amenities. When you travel outside of the campground, whether in a boat or on foot prepare for the unexpected as well as the expected. The Boundary Waters Area is a maze of lakes and rivers. If you find yourself lost there, it is important to have the necessary supplies to spend the night in the forest. These may include extra food, water and an emergency shelter.
