Players use summer camp, a crucial time of the year for the team, to learn plays and formations and improve their overall conditioning levels. Coaches try to get their players in the best shape possible so they can play good football early in the season and have the endurance to play a full season.

Football Ladders

Running football ladders helps players work on their speed and endurance. Start at the goal line. On the coach's whistle, the players sprint to the 40-yard line and back, the 30-yard line and back and the 20-yard line and back. Take a one-minute break and repeat this drill four more times. The key is for all players to sprint each race. If a player jogs on the last ladder, make all your players do an extra set of sprints.

Bull In the Ring

This workout works to help all players improve their tackling. Players must get in a circle. The coach designates a player to get in the center of the circle. The coach tosses the football to one player in the circle and he must run to the opposite side of the circle. The player in the center must tackle the player who comes across. All players get a chance to run the ball and to tackle at least one of their teammates. This will help prepare players for the contact and hard hitting demanded throughout the season.

Full Team Scrimmage

The best way for your team to get better at football is to play football. Before a full-team scrimmage, separate your team into three groups. The offensive linemen square off against the defensive linemen in one group, the running backs go up against the linebackers in the second and the quarterbacks and wideouts meet the defensive backs in the other. After this 30-minute practice is concluded, have a full team offense vs. defense scrimmage. Run each play and have the coaches on the field so the play can be broken down and corrected on the spot. Play at least 45 minutes to an hour at full speed.
