Acne is a condition that is characterized by blemishes of the skin. Acne is caused by excess oil of the skin, bacteria and irregular skin shedding. Hormones are believed to take part in the process. A multitude of treatments are available to treat acne; topical agents, antibiotics, and orally administered medications. New therapies are emerging that can be used to treat acne. These treatments are used on acne that does not respond to traditional treatments.
Blue Light Therapy
Blue light therapy is used to kill the bacteria that can cause acne. According to the experts at the Mayo Clinic, exposing the skin to blue pulsed light may destroy the bacteria P. Acnes. This treatment is painless and usually takes a few sessions for effective results. This device may cause redness and dryness of the treated skin.
Diode Laser Therapy
Diode lasers are used to destroy oil glands in the skin that are located in the middle layer of the skin. This treatment is painful, but it does not harm the outer layer of the skin. This device causes swelling and redness of the treated area.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photo-dynamic therapy comprises topical agents and light therapy. During a treatment, a topical agent known as photo-sensitizing agent is used. After applying the topical treatment, the skin is exposed to blue and red pulsed light. The photo-sensitizing cream enhances the effect of the pulsed light.
