The HCL in hydroxyzine HCL, or hydroxyz HCL, stands for hydrochloride. The hydrochloride form of medicines helps make them more water soluble. It is prescribed for motion sickness, itching caused by allergies and for nausea and vomiting that are caused by various conditions. It can also be used to treat anxiety and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The National Library of Medicine notes that the side effects of hydroxyzine HCL are typically mild and transitory.

Side Effects

If the side effects become severe or do not go away, medical attention should be sought. These side effects include dryness in the mouth, throat and nose, an upset stomach, headaches and redness of the skin. There can also be chest congestion. Drowsiness and dizziness can also result as a side effect of taking hydroxyzine HCL. Patients should be aware of the potential side effects of drowsiness and dizziness before driving automobiles or operating heavy machinery. The use of alcohol can increase the drowsiness side effect of this drug.

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects involve the central nervous system. Cases of convulsions and tremors have been reported. These side effects, when they occur, are usually associated with doses higher than recommended.

Adverse Reactions

Some symptoms signify a significant adverse reaction to hydroxyzine hydrochloride. If any of these symptoms occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. These symptoms include muscle weakness, difficulty with breathing and an increase in the level of anxiety.

Overdose

The intake of higher doses of hydroxyzine hydrochloride can result in symptoms of a drug overdose. The main symptom of an overdose is an accentuated level of sedation.
