Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery stools occurring three or more times in one day, states MedlinePlus. The condition is caused by bacteria, viruses, eating or drinking contaminated food and some medications. Still, in many cases of diarrhea no specific cause is identifiable. Most American adults deal with diarrhea about four times a year. Children commonly suffer from the condition between seven and 15 times by the time they reach 5 years old.
Foods
When diarrhea first hits, a person should avoid eating for about 24 hours to allow the stomach to settle. Small meals and snacks of bland food are then encouraged. Unflavored rice, potatoes and chicken may slowly be reintroduced. Starchy foods increase binding of the loose stools and heal the body of diarrhea. Unsweetened applesauce and other peeled fruits may be consumed. Removing the peel makes the fruit easier to digest. Toast, crackers and dry cereals are helpful. Plain yogurt is the only dairy product recommended when diarrhea is present.
Beverages
Clear liquids including sports beverages, teas, clear sodas, broth and water are encouraged. Sodas should go flat before consuming. Drink or sip liquids throughout the day to prevent dehydration. If a person cannot keep liquids down, sucking on ice chips is a way to continue to hydrate the body. White grape juice is recommended, but patients should avoid all other juices. Juices contain sugars which can worsen diarrhea. Water added to the grape juice may dilute if it is too sweet. Popsicles and gelatin may hydrate the body when diarrhea exists. According to the American Cancer Society, about 3 quarts of fluids are encouraged per day.
Foods to Avoid
Some foods make diarrhea worse and should not be consumed for several days. These foods include most dairy products, caffeinated beverages and very sweet or spicy foods. High fiber foods should also be avoided. The National Digestive Centers Information Clearinghouse suggests patients avoid nicotine products and refrain from drinking alcohol until diarrhea subsides. Cabbage, beans, Brussels sprouts and lettuce are foods which increase gas products and should not be eaten, advises Healthcastle.com.
