With its geographic diversity, abundant sunshine and dramatic Midwestern landscapes, Oklahoma provides the perfect environment for horseback riding enthusiasts of all skill levels. It's no wonder that there are so many riding stables across the state, with each offering unique, healthy and enjoyable riding activities, as well as access to the diverse plains, forests, hills and mountains of Oklahoma. Best of all, most offer fun, dynamic activities for kids, like hayrides and pony rides, as well.

From Mountains to Canyons

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, Cedar Lake Riding Stables has something for you. The stable is located in Hodgen (southeast Oklahoma), with ideal access for horseback enthusiasts to nearby mountains as well as the beautiful Ouachita National Forest. Cedar Lake offers trails for riders of all experience levels--from beginner to experienced.

Roman Nose Riding Stables in Watonga, meanwhile, offer scenic canyon rides, as well as wholesome trail rides of either one or two hours, plus dinner rides, hay rides and pony rides for the little ones.

Guided Rides

Located deep in the Gloss Mountains, Gloss Mountain Outfitters' riding stables include such activities as guided horseback rides from the ranch to the Great Salt plains. Excursions can range from two hours in length to overnight camping trips; rodeos and wagon rides are also part of the fun. Visitors can even bring their own horses.

Thunderbird Riding Stables, south of Norman, also offers guided trail rides, with options on more than 500 acres of nearby wooded trails. Guided trail rides are one hour in length, but open riding is also an option for more experienced riders.

Healthy, Horsy Fun for Kids

Monkey Island Trail & Hay Rides is a horseback riding stable that offers an assortment of fun outdoor activities for riding enthusiasts, from hay rides to pony rides--even a petting zoo for critter-loving kids. The stable also offers short guided horse trail rides from dawn to dusk, of either half an hour or an hour in length.

There's more horseback fun for kids just north of Tulsa on Highway 169. Duke's Barn, a boutique horse farm, offers a riding stable and "horse hotel" with a wealth of riding exercises, from an indoor arena to group trail rides, birthday pony parties, pony rides, beginning horsemanship lessons for kids and balanced riding lessons.

300 Miles of Open Trail

Explore the open trail with Sequoyah Riding Stables of Hulbert, Oklahoma. Sequoyah offers trail ride options including more than 300 acres of open trails and wooded trails.

The stable also stages hay rides or pony rides for healthy family fun, adding cookouts and parties as the perfect accompaniments to the festivities.

Cave Rides

The D Bar T Stables in Wilburton, near the forested hills of the San Bois Mountains, is open March through October each year,

D Bar T's professional and experienced wranglers not only teach the basics of horseback riding, they also offer trail rides into the nearby mountains, as well as stunning and unique "cave rides" and even hay rides and pony rides for kids of all ages.
