Central Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass Region, home to the major Kentucky cities of Lexington, Louisville and Frankfort. This region is best known for its horse farms. Across Central Kentucky are a variety of youth activities, both educational and recreational, to keep your children entertained and active.

Lexington

The YMCA of Central Kentucky has six locations scattered around this region. This organization provides a variety of affordable programs designed to build a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Youth athletics are another option. For youth in the Lexington area, sign them up for a teen swim class or youth sports league. Leagues are available for children as young as age 3 and include gymnastics, soccer, basketball, baseball, football and cheerleading teams.

Frankfort

According to Canoe Kentucky, the state has more free-flowing rivers than any other state other than Alaska. Have your child spend an exciting day out in the fresh Kentucky air by heading to the Still Waters Canoe Trails near Frankfort. These trails run along the scenic Kentucky River. The river is calm due to the 14 locks and dams. Guided canoe trips last approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Louisville

Children of all ages get excited about learning at the Louisville Science Center. The aim of this museum is to encourage people of all ages to explore science in everyday life. The Center features more than 150 interactive exhibits that are designed to engage children and adults. This 12,500 square-foot permanent exhibit features activity stations that involve mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering and telecommunications. If your youth enjoys science, help him become even more involved by signing him up for one of the center's Overnight Adventures. Each of these overnight adventures has a unique theme and is open to children in grades 1 through 5.

Bowling Green

A unique way to keep your kids active while also entertaining them is by taking a journey through the Lost River Cave. Located in Bowling Green, the Lost River Cave tour lasts for 20 minutes and takes groups along the shortest and deepest underground river tour in the world. The tour is available year round thanks to the comfortable and continuous 57 degrees Fahrenheit found in the cave.

After completing the tours, go on a self-guided tour of the butterfly habitat or take a hike along the Blue Hole Trails. The visitor's center has Exploring Nature kits available that include child-friendly activities such as trail guides, bird listings and tree identifications.

Richmond

When youth in the Richmond area have a little bit of extra energy, send them over to the Richmond Park and Recreation Department's free basketball group. This club meets Monday through Friday, September through April. Children of all ages are welcome to participate.

Another option for youth in Richmond is the Lake Reba Recreational Complex. This 450-acre center features a large playground, an 18-hole miniature golf course, baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts and walking trails. There is even a fishing pond stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish for your children who are interested in fishing.
