Losing weight requires discipline, willpower and awareness, all of which can be learned and strengthened through a session on the yoga mat. By moving through various yoga postures, you will begin to sculpt and tone your muscles, shed fat and get closer to your personal weight-loss goals. There are several media options through Gaiam Yoga that you can follow.

About Gaiam

Gaiam is a wellness company that began in 1988 with the mission of improving the environment and inspiring healthy living. Their philosophy "thrives on health, vitality and transformation. [They] practice values that encourage personal wellness, respect for the planet and a path toward conscious living." Their website includes an extensive list of health and wellness articles, information on charities and an online shop.

Products

Gaiam's products range from clothing to music to housewares, all with an eco-friendly theme that even carries through to their packaging. They have an abundance of exercise-related materials that cover yoga, Pilates, dance, tai chi and strength training. Their media section focuses on music, books, DVDs and magazines.

Solutions

As of October 2010, Gaiam has six different yoga DVD options that aid in weight loss. One option includes a kit of three-pound push-up weights, a round foam bolster, and a multi-workout DVD. Other options include three DVDs for a discounted rate or one basic DVD for beginners. The A.M. and P.M. Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss comes with a weight loss guidebook that aims to rebalance your metabolism. Most of the weight-loss DVDs are with yoga instructor Suzanne Deason.

Cost

The basic Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss DVD with Suzanne Deason retails for $11.98 on sale and has four levels of difficulty. The kits range from $19.98 to $48.00, depending on what is included.

Misconceptions

Yoga continues to gain in popularity for a variety of reasons, weight loss being one of them. Yet while sweating it out on your mat for an hour feels great and will help tone your muscles, it's not just the asana practice that will keep the weight off for good. Practicing yoga has an almost magical way of shifting your mindset and shedding light on the conflicting thoughts and stories that your mind creates. If you are overweight, there may be a negative association with food. As one yoga practitioner, Larry Sherman, claims, "I had to change my mind! It wasn't about my body." By making better food choices and increasing his energy though his yoga practice, his new mindset is what began to change his body and kickstart the weight loss.
