According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne, also referred to as acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition in the United States, affecting approximately 40 million to 50 million people. However, a number of reliable vitamins can help to prevent and reduce the severity of acne formation.
Vitamin A
Topical and oral forms of vitamin A that contain retinoids are beneficial in helping to clear up severe acne, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Also, vitamin A in combination with carotenoids helps to keep your skin tissues strong and eliminates acne formation by reducing the production of a natural-body produced oil called sebum. Vitamin A helps your body deal with stress, which is a contributing factor of acne in some cases.
Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace mineral, found in mostly every cell of your body. It helps to prevent acne by regulating the activity of your oil glands, according to Dr. George Obikoya of the Vitamins and Nutrition Center. A lack of zinc in the body may result in acne formation. Also, the University of Maryland Medical Center says some forms of zinc in conjunction with a topical antibiotic erythromycin may be helpful in improving acne.
B Vitamins
The B complex group of vitamins is beneficial in helping to prevent acne. Thiamine, also known as vitamin B-1, is recommended to combat acne as it helps to enhance skin cells' circulation and also acts as an antioxidant. A lack of the B vitamins niacinamide or vitamin B-3, pyridozine or vitamin B-5 and pantothenic acid of vitamin B-5 may result in acne formation.
