Cures for Heat Exhaustion

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, heat exhaustion occurs when your body gets too hot over a long period of time. The body cools itself by sweating, but if fluids aren't replaced, heat exhaustion can occur. This requires immediate attention, as heat stroke may occur, which is a critical condition that can lead to death. Some symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, fatigue, heavy sweating, dizziness and nausea. See your doctor right away if you experience such symptoms.

Cool the Body Down

FamilyDoctor.org suggests to stay in a cool environment---one that has air-conditioning---especially on hot days. If you cannot find an indoor place, rest in a shady area. Remove clothing if necessary, and fan the body off. Drink plenty of liquids, such as ones with electrolytes. Place ice packs on the body, especially on the underarms, neck, back and groin. These areas have a lot of blood vessels that are close to the skin and can help the body cool down immediately. If you do not feel better within 30 minutes, contact your doctor.

Mineral Supplements and Foods

According to UMMC, certain minerals and foods can help prevent heat exhaustion from happening. Supplements that contain the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium help the body endure without reaching exhaustion. Follow the suggested dosage amount on the label and still drink plenty of water or beverages with electrolytes. Foods to consume include dark, leafy green vegetables; seaweeds; nuts; seeds; bananas; and whole grains. These foods are nutrient rich and high in mineral content.

Herbs and Homeopathy

Herbs may also help lower the body's overall temperature, according to UMMC. The herb Chinese skullcap, which is used in Chinese traditional medicine, may help by dilating the vessels near the skin. Elderflower may be used to treat fever and give the immune system a boost. Cayenne pepper may help stimulate the sweat glands in the body. Yarrow is a herb that is used to treat fever. You can find these herbs in capsule form or as teas or tinctures at health food stores. Homeopathic remedies such as belladonna and glonoinum are also suggested to help with high temperatures in the body. Check with a homeopathic or health care professional before taking such remedies.
