What Are Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?
Diabetes
Erectile dysfunction is also called "ED" or "impotence." This condition is where you are unable to maintain an erection long enough to complete a sexual experience. According to the Minnesota Men's Health Center, it is one of the most common sexual disorders in men targeting approximately one in every 10. Diabetes is a condition that causes blood sugar levels to become elevated due to a lack of insulin production in the pancreas. This can lead to damaged nerves which can prevent an erection from taking place.
Vascular Disease
High blood pressure, known clinically as "hypertension," is a condition where your reading is 140/90 or higher. Along with another type of vascular disease called "atherosclerosis," high blood pressure can cause erectile dysfunction. Atherosclerosis is a condition where the arteries become clogged with plaque due to elevated cholesterol levels. This in turn can restrict blood flow to the penis causing erectile dysfunction.
Damage
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that sits at the bottom of the bladder. Its main function is to produce seminal fluid and regulate urine flow. When cancer develops and the prostate is removed, nerves can become damaged and erectile dysfunction can result. This can also take place with any surgery in the pelvic area where nerves are damaged. Injuries to the spinal cord or any condition that affects the spinal cord like multiple sclerosis can also cause erectile dysfunction.
Testosterone
Testosterone is a male dominant sex hormone that is also responsible for energy levels, mood and muscle preservation. A condition known as "hypogonadism" is characterized by having a lower than normal release of testosterone. This can lead to impotence.
Side Effects
Prescription medications are used to treat symptoms of an underlying condition or illness. They may effective at doing that, but they can often come with side effects such as erectile dysfunction. Examples of drugs that can cause this include tranquilizers, blood pressure pills, antidepressants, antihistamines and appetite suppressants.
Alcohol
Having one to two alcoholic beverages a day is the standard definition of "moderation." Drinking this amount does not have much of an impact on the system. But when your body becomes dependent on alcohol on a daily basis, it is called "alcoholism." This condition can lead to liver disorders, digestive problems and erectile dysfunction.
Lifestyle
Sexual feelings start in the brain. Any kind of psychological factor you are dealing with on a daily basis can lead to erectile dysfunction. Examples of these are anxiety, guilt, depression, fatigue, stress, poor communication with your partner and low self esteem.
