Roxy and Burton Snowboards continue to specialize in sporting goods used for various competitive sports including surfing and snowboarding. Although the Burton company exclusively manufactures snowboarding gear including boards and boots, Roxy encompasses various alternative sports and offers snowboards, skis and surfboards. Burton Snowboards creates snowboarding equipment for both males and females while Roxy produces goods to meet the needs of female athletes.
History
According to Roxy, the company was created in 1900 as a female line under the Quicksilver surfing and clothing corporation. In the beginning, Roxy only produced ladies swimwear used for surfing and leisure. Roxy didn't release its first line of female-only snowboards until 2003. Roxy now sponsors female snowboarding competitions across the globe called the Roxy Chicken Jams. Despite its current success, Burton Snowboards was grown from humble beginnings. Jake Burton Carpenter started Burton Snowboards in 1977 out of his house in Vermont. The company experienced little success in the early years but now stands as a prominent company in the snowboarding industry.
Types
Both Burton and Roxy produce snowboards that can adapt to the various terrains that snowboarding has to offer. According to Burton, its Custom Flying V model of boards allows you to easily carve through thick powdery snow commonly referred to as powder. Burton also produces snowboards used for terrain parks that feature large ramps and metallic rails. The Sugar series of snowboards from Roxy are built with a basic design that allows novice riders to test out the different types of terrain.
Function
The snowboards made by Burton and Roxy are used to reach top speeds down designated snowboarding slopes and backwoods riding trails. Freestyle snowboarders use the Roxy or Burton snowboard to execute tricks on large U-shaped ramps made of snow. Riders also participate in slope-style events, which take place on designated parks filled with snowboarding obstacles. As well as being used for competition, the Burton and Roxy snowboards often are used for calorie-burning exercise.
Features
Although certain snowboarding companies opt to construct their boards with a cheaper plastic material, Burton spares no expense to produce top-quality snowboards. According to Burton, the core of the Burton snowboard features a lightweight and pliable wooden construction known as the Superfly Core. The front and back end of the Burton snowboard features a tapered edge to cut down on the overall weight of the board. The snowboards from Roxy feature flowered graphics and other various female-inspired designs.
Size
Roxy offers snowboards of varying widths and lengths to accommodate the different sizes of female riders. The Sugar model from Roxy has a compact design to allow a young rider to easily maneuver the board. Burton also offers full-sized snowboarding models for adult male and female riders. The Hero's Small snowboard model from Burton has a custom build for boys 12 and younger with a length of just over 4 feet.
