You may develop a fungal infection in your fingernails if your hands are often wet, if you have artificial nail tips, or if you have diabetes or circulatory problems. Most of the time, fingernail fungus is not a serious health problem, but it can be difficult to treat. See your doctor if you notice the symptoms of a fungal infection so you can begin treatment promptly.

Changes in Appearance

If you have fingernail fungus, your nails may look dull or discolored. MayoClinic.com states that the first symptom of nail fungus is often a small white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail. The nails may also become discolored from dirt and other debris building up under them in pockets where the nail has separated from the nail bed. Your nails may be thicker than normal, and may crumble easily.

Onycholysis

Onycholysis is the separation of the nail from the nail bed. According to DermNet NZ, this condition sometimes occurs as the result of a fungal infection in the fingernail. Typically, the nail will begin to separate at the tip of the nail, and the space will gradually get bigger and spread toward the base of the nail. The white part of your nail may appear to get deeper, and the nail will look opaque. Sometimes the opaque area may look yellow or green due to the infection.

Other Symptoms

In some cases, you may experience pain or discomfort with a fungal fingernail infection, says FamilyDoctor.org. Your nails may also become distorted or curve upward or downward.

If you have diabetes, leukemia or a suppressed immune system, you may develop a more serious infection if you do not have a fungal infection treated promptly, warns MayoClinic.com. If you notice any symptoms of a fungal infection and you have health issues that may suppress your immunity, see your doctor right away to avoid complications.
