Hair comes in many different textures and colors, but all hair requires the basics for healthy growth. Whether hair is curly or straight, gentle treatment is a necessity, according to KidsHealth. Hair must be washed, combed and styled, all of which require hair care tools and products. Many African-American children have curly hair, which requires combs and other hair products made especially for their hair type.

Combs and Brush

Caring for your African-American child's hair requires a rattail comb, a wide-tooth comb and a boars-bristle brush, according to the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program. The rattail comb is used for parting the child's hair and removing debris such as lint, and the wide-tooth comb is used for combing out thick hair. A pick is often helpful for detangling. A soft or medium boar-bristle brush is recommended as least damaging to African-American hair. Plastic and nylon bristles cause breakage in African-American hair.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Your African-American child's hair requires a shampoo that is free of lauryl, or laureth, sulfate, which strips the hair of its natural oils and is not intended for curly hair. The Pennsylvania Child Welfare Training Program recommends a mild, moisturizing shampoo with a pH balance of 5 for regular use and a clarifying shampoo for use every four to six weeks to remove the build-up of hair products on the hair. A leave-in conditioner helps with the comb-out process. A hot-oil treatment used once a month provides more protection for your child's hair.

Hair Oil

A light oil is best for your child's hair and scalp. Avoid heavy oils that contain petroleum, lanolin and mineral oils. These products can clog the child's pores and slow the growth of hair. Use oils that contain olive, almond, lavender, sage or rosemary. Hair oils provide shine, nutrients and moisture.

Hair Ornaments

You will need barrettes, hair clips and ponytail holders such as cloth-covered rubber bands or knockers. Hair clips come in handy for holding back parted sections of hair while styling. A satin scarf or hair cap, or a satin pillow case, prevents hair breakage caused by the hair rubbing against cotton pillow cases. A shower cap protects your child's hair during bathing after styling.

Hair Care Items

A blow dryer helps with detangling and faster drying of your child's curly hair. You will need a pair of fine point scissors for clipping the ends of her hair. Purchase a detangler spray or make your own with one part oil, six parts water and a spray bottle.
