Drills increase the consistency of volleyball setters through repeated practice. Setting drills typically involve a fast pace to get the players used to playing under pressure. Tossing balls quickly at the setters during the drills forces them to use peripheral vision and other skills to react immediately for a successful set.
Sideways Setting
Pairs of players practice sets as they gradually move sideways for this volleyball drill. The two players face one another standing 15 to 20 feet apart. The players set the ball back and forth to one another. After each player sets the ball, both take a step to the side as they continue setting the ball. The players continue moving sideways across a predetermined distance. Have a new pair of players start the drill after the first pair takes a few steps. Continue adding pairs until everyone gets a chance to do the drill.
Moving Blocker
This setting drill requires the setter to focus on the blocker at the same time she is getting ready to set the ball. The coach or another player tosses a volleyball to the setter. The blocker on the other side of the net moves either left or right. The setter must set the ball in the opposite direction of the blocker's move. Focus on using peripheral vision to track the movements of the blocker.
Another variation uses the coach on the opposite side of the net. As the ball is tossed to the setter, the coach points to the direction that she wants the setter to aim the volleyball. Keep the balls coming at the setter rapidly to make it more of a challenge.
Seated Setting
For a basic, strength-building setter drill, divide the players into pairs and have them sit down several feel apart. The players set the ball back and forth as they sit. This drill takes away the power of the legs, requiring the players to rely on their wrist strength to set the ball well. This activity also works well for younger players who are learning the basics of the set.
Kill the Setter
One player is designated the setter, while other players form three lines of hitters. The coach tosses the ball, and the setter moves from the back row to setting position. The first hitter from each row moves forward into position. The setter sets the volleyball to one of the three hitters, who must successfully hit it over the net without getting out of bounds. After 10 successful in-bounds hits, a new setter takes over.
