Warm-up drills prepare volleyball players for an upcoming practice or game. The activities loosen up the muscles and often integrate basic volleyball skills. The skill level of the players plays a role in the type of warm-up drills that work best. Modifications, such as smaller playing areas, allow younger players to do the drills.
Four Square
The volleyball court is divided into four quadrants for this warm-up drill. Each square is assigned a number from one to four. One player stands in each square and is responsible for hitting the ball when it comes to that square. The rest of the team stands in a line waiting to rotate in. The goal is to reach the number one square and hold your spot there. The number one player serves the ball across the net to either player three or four. If the receiving player misses the ball, hits it out of bounds or hits it into the net, she is out. If she successfully returns the ball, the four players continue the game, each person staying in her own square. The first person to miss a ball or hit an error is out and goes to the end of the line. The remaining players shift one spot toward the number one spot, and a new player takes the number four spot.
One-Bounce Dig
The players are divided into two teams, both standing on the same side of the court, with one team at one corner and the other team at the other corner. The first player from line one tosses a ball onto the court so it bounces near the middle of the court. The first player from line two runs to the ball and digs to a setter before the ball bounces a second time. The players go to the end of the opposite line after each turn so they get a chance to do both tasks.
Line Passing
This warm-up drill also divides the players into two separate lines. The teams line up with the first person from each team facing one another. One player begins the volleyball passing by tossing it to the first player in the other line before going to the back of the line. The player from line two returns the ball, with either a set or a dig. She then goes to the end of her line. The goal is to continue passing the ball back and forth between the lines, with each player going to the end after hitting the ball.
