Smart Shopping for BMX Tires

BMX tires can be best described as hybrid tires that are designed to tackle a variety of surfaces. Tire design incorporates different treads and sizes that make them adaptable to the many facets of the sport. BMX tires range from 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. In dirt racing, riders encounter different conditions on different tracks, or different surfaces on the same track. Hard-packed dirt, mud, or a combination of both conditions, usually requires a small knobbed tire that can grip multiple surfaces.

In freestyle riding, a tire with a lot of grip for pavement or concrete is ideal. Riders often inflate these tires to a higher pressure level to help lower rolling resistance and protect their wheel rims while doing tricks. These tires are usually extremely thibk and may appear smooth or have a tread that best resembles worn-down knobbies.

What to Look for

When purchasing tires for your bike, think about the types of riding you do the most. Knobby, dirt riders are not ideal for freestyle riding and vice versa. The tires should not skid or slide when you try to accelerate.

Snafu and Mongoose are common racing tire brands. Popular freestyle brands include Demolition, Hoffman, Maxxis and Odysssey, and most models retail between $15 and $50 each.

Common Pitfalls

With tires being relatively inexpensive in relation to the other parts of the bike, it's worthwhile to invest in a variety of tire styles. They are relatively easy to switch out when needed, and you may find through experience that certain tires aid your cause on different surfaces.
