Side Effects of Augmentin, Ceftin, Lorabid and Keflex

Augmentin contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium and is a penicillin antibiotic, notes Drugs.com. Ceftin, also known as cefuroxime, is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Lorabid is an antibiotic usually grouped together with second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics. Keflex, also known as cephalexin, is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacteria such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections. The use of these antibiotics may cause several effects.

Pseudomembranous Colitis

Pseudomembranous colitis is infection of the large intestine with an overgrowth of Clostridium difficile bacteria. Pseudomembranous colitis is usually caused by the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics like Augmentin, Ceftin, Lorabid and Keflex. Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body including good bacteria in the colon that prevent overgrowth of bad bacteria like Clostridium difficile. Symptoms of pseudomembranous colitis include stomach cramping, bloody stool, fever and watery diarrhea.

Gynecological Problems

All antibiotics may cause several gynecological problems, according to the National Institutes of Health. Antibiotics kill good bacteria in the vagina, which can result in yeast infections and other vaginal problems. Antibiotics also make oral birth control pills less effective. Women of childbearing age taking antibiotic should use condoms during sex. All women taking antibiotics women should eat yogurt to restore a healthy balance of bacteria.

Hypersensitivity

According to Drugs.com, some patients may develop severe allergic reactions after taking Augmentin, Ceftin, Lorabid and Keflex. There is a cross-sensitivity between penicillin antibiotics and cephalosporins; patients allergic to penicillin are also allergic to cephalosporin and vice versa. Signs of allergic reactions include problems breathing, wheezing, swelling of the tongue, throat, face and eyelids, rash, hives, chest tightness and upset stomach.
