Balaton cherries are a type of tart cherry that can contain up to seven times the amount of anthocyanins of other types of cherries. Anthocyanins are bioactive phytonutrients that give cherries their deep red color and are rich in antioxidants. Balaton cherries are also rich in vitamins A, C and E and contain fiber, iron, potassium and magnesium. They are one of the few foods that contain melatonin and can help regulate your sleep cycle.
Anthocyanins
Apart from providing cherries with their red coloring, anthocyanins can fight inflammation. Balaton cherry juice can provide pain relief for sore muscles after exercise, and according to research presented at the 2009 American College of Sports Medicine Conference "cherries could affect inflammation related to heart disease, arthritis and may even help maintain muscle strength for those suffering from fibromyalgia."
Vitamins A, C and E
Balaton cherries have almost 20 times more vitamin A, also called beta-carotene, than strawberries or blueberries. Vitamin A contributes to strong teeth, bones and skin and is important for the female reproductive system and breastfeeding. Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron and vitamin E keeps your immune system functioning and aids in metabolism.
Important Minerals
Minerals regulate your heartbeat, manufacture hormones and build strong bones. Both types of minerals -- macrominerals, which your body needs in large quantities, such as potassium and magnesium -- and trace minerals, which your body uses in small amounts such as iron are found in Balaton cherry juice.
Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle. Dr. Russell Reiter of the University of Texas Health Science Center has been studying melatonin for more than 30 years and found that tart cherries "contain an extremely significant quantity of melatonin, enough to produce positive results in the body."
