Nobody wants smelly feet, and smelly socks are just as unpleasant to deal with. If your sock odor is caused by stress, exercise or hot weather, a few simple measures can help keep it to a minimum. If your foot odor occurs for no apparent reason or is significant enough to interfere with your everyday life, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss possible medical options.

Step 1

Wear socks made with natural fibers, such as cotton or wool, to absorb sweat and to prevent your feet and socks from getting smelly.

Step 2

Wash your feet with warm, soapy water and dry them completely -- especially the area between your toes, which can harbor up to 1,000 times more bacteria than any other part of your body, according Robin Ross, a New York podiatrist, in "Backpacker" magazine.

Step 3

Alternate shoes each day to give each pair at least 24 hours to completely air out. Wearing the same shoes two or more days in a row can lead to foot odor in your socks.

Step 4

Carry a change of socks and a washcloth with you, and clean your feet and change your socks whenever they feel damp during the day to prevent odor. Change your socks after a vigorous workout or activity session.

Tips and Warnings

  • Check your feet for scaling and peeling. If your foot odor is accompanied by these physical signs, you may have athlete's foot and will need to use an anti-fungal foot powder.
  • If your shoes are too tight, they're more likely to sweat and develop blisters that can increase your risk of odor-causing infections.
