Wrinkles are an unfortunate part of getting older. Dr. Diane Berson, a dermatologist, says that wrinkles crop up because of damage done to your skin's collagen and elastin, the components that keep skin firm and plump. She also notes that sun exposure increases the rate at which fine lines and other signs of aging will show up. Protect your skin from further damage, diminish the wrinkles you have and help keep new ones at bay by using skincare products designed to smooth fine lines, increase collagen and keep your face hydrated and fresh-looking.
Step 1
Wash your face in the morning with a creamy, nourishing cleanser. Wet your face and hands, and smooth the product over your skin using a circular motion. This will remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells that can clog pores and make your complexion dull. Rinse off the cleanser and pat your face dry.
Step 2
Apply a skin serum that contains antioxidants. "Cosmopolitan" magazine recommends looking for a product made with idebenone, a powerful anti-aging ingredient that helps block out environmental aggressors, as well as diminish wrinkles and other signs of aging. Smooth the serum all over your face, neck and chest, and allow it to soak in before you move on to Step 3.
Step 3
Slather your face and body with a moisturizing sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher. This will help prevent the UV damage that can make wrinkles and age spots look worse and cause more to develop. For a more even-looking complexion, "Cosmopolitan" suggests selecting a sunscreen that also contains skin brighteners, which will reflect light and disguise imperfections. Reapply the sunscreen throughout the day as needed.
Step 4
Wash your face with the same creamy cleanser at night, and then reapply the serum. Let it soak in, and apply a rich, anti-aging moisturizer on top of it. "Marie Claire" magazine recommends using a product that contains vitamins and retinol, which speeds up cell renewal, plumps up your skin and helps smooth out wrinkles. If you have wrinkles around your eyes, you can look for eye creams with these same ingredients. Dot the eye cream around your eyes and gently blend it in with your finger.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid harsh soaps that can rob your skin of essential oils.
- Products containing retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Take caution when you spend time in the sun, and apply sunscreen every day. If you notice your skin starting to flake or become irritated, use the retinol cream every other night, and see a doctor if the irritation does not subside within a week.
