Anyone who has known someone who has killed himself may ask why it happened. Was there a way to prevent it? There are some signs recognized by the medical community that may be indications of suicidal thoughts. While not all suicides can be prevented, knowing some the signs leading up to such an event can help.

Threats

Some people may threaten to take their own lives and never do it. Even though people who actually do commit suicide may not threaten it ahead of time, all such threats should be considered possible. Even if the person is not going to kill herself, the threat is a plea for help, whether conscious or unconscious.

Seclusion

Sometimes, people just want to be alone. However, if the person previously was gregarious and social, and if the seclusion continues for some time, the person might be depressed. Depression does not always lead to suicide, but can. Sudden or extended seclusion can be a sign of withdrawal from the world and may lead to suicidal thoughts. This withdrawal from the world also can manifest as disinterest in activities that, until now, have brought pleasure to the person.

Sadness

Mood shifts and long periods of sadness also are signs of depression that could be early signs of possible suicidal behavior. Especially if there is no immediate reason for sadness and it lasts a long time, it can lead a person to think there is no hope.

Dangerous Behavior

Especially in a person who is normally cautious and reserved, dangerous behavior may indicate a person does not value his life. Such behaviors may include unsafe or promiscuous sex, driving recklessly and taking risks the person normally wouldn't take. He may also start drinking heavily or taking illicit drugs or too many prescribed drugs, such as pain killers.

Personality Changes

Some personality changes may happen over time, but sudden ones, especially if they are radically different, may mean a person is considering self-inflicted death. This could include speaking more slowly or quickly, or moving in a different way. Reduced personal hygiene and concern with appearance also may be signs, as is becoming suddenly calm. The descent of calm may be a signal that a decision has been made about suicide.

Preparing

Someone who suddenly starts to clean up his personal situation, such as throwing out or giving as gifts treasured possessions, also might be considering suicide. He might visit old friends he hasn't seen in many years. He might make the rounds of family members. He might write one or more suicide notes.

Trauma

It may be the most obvious sign of potential suicide victims, but trauma in one's life can lead there. Trauma may include divorce, death of someone close to her, unemployment, financial difficulties or being diagnosed with a serious ailment.
