According to statistics published by the National Cancer Institute, while colorectal cancer has decreased in the last 10 years since 2009, it is still the third most common cancer in the United States for both men and women. The National Cancer Institute says that more studies are needed about the relationship between foods and the risk of colorectal cancer -- but foods you eat may increase your odds of keeping your colon healthy and cancer-free.

Fruits and Vegetables

All fruits and vegetables may decrease your risk for colon cancer, according to New York-Presbyterian Hospital which suggests you eat a rainbow colored variety. Fruits and vegetables also add fiber to your diet which help your body digest food and excrete waste. Along with fluids, fiber prevents constipation, keeping your bowels functioning properly.

Whole Grains

Whole-grain breads, cereals and pasta, along with brown rice and whole grains themselves such as barley, bulgur and wheat berries contain lots of soluble fiber that help move food through your digestive system. According to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, you need to drink plenty of water when you increase the amount of fiber intake.

Fish, Chicken, Beans, Nuts and Soy Products

The National Cancer Institute says diets high in saturated fat may increase your risk of colorectal cancer. Limit your consumption of red meat to only special occasions -- or twice a week at the most -- and always choose lean cuts. Instead, eat fish, skinless white chicken breasts, beans, nuts and soy products for protein.

Foods High in Calcium, Vitamin D and Folate

Diets low in calcium and folate may increase your risk of colon cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. Make healthy foods high in calcium part of your daily diet, including low-fat dairy products, salmon either fresh or canned, and fortified foods such as whole-grain breads and orange juice. Vitamin D will help your body absorb calcium, so take calcium supplements with vitamin D and, if possible, get some sunshine each day -- and eat fortified foods. Foods high in folates include lentils, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, strawberries and oranges, according to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Probiotics

Probiotics are living bacteria that reduce abnormal cell development in animals and may help prevent colon cancer in humans, according to Karen Collins of the American Institute for Cancer Research. Collins suggests you check labels on yogurts to see the words "active cultures" and "live cultures." Other products with probiotics include acidophilus milk, kefir and some fermented soy products such as miso and tempeh, says the American Institute for Cancer Research.
