Heartburn is caused by reflux, a condition in which stomach acid is regurgitated into the esophagus. If you have heartburn at least twice a week, you have GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Burning
The primary symptom of heartburn is a feeling of heat, burning or discomfort just inside and sometimes just underneath the breastbone. This feeling may progress all the way up your throat in waves.
Triggers
Heartburn can sometimes be triggered by eating too much, bending forward or lifting heavy objects after eating, or laying down right after eating a heavy meal.
Foods
According to the Mayo Clinic, certain foods or drinks may trigger heartburn. These include fatty or fried foods, orange juice and tomato sauce, vinegar, black pepper, coffee, chocolate, alcohol and soft drinks.
Causes
Pregnancy, obesity, smoking, some medications and hiatal hernia can all weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, which then causes heartburn by allowing the stomach contents to back up into the esophagus.
Symptoms
Other symptoms of heartburn include a sour feeling in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, belching and regurgitating food.
