According to the Organic Consumer Association, the U.S. government does not have a legal definition for the term "organic" when used in cosmetics or personal care products. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary states that one definition of organic is "of, relating to, or derived from living organisms." Hair care products labeled organic often contain plant extracts and natural botanicals rather than lab-created chemicals.
Shampoos
Winner of the 2010 Stellar Organic Award for Organic Hair Care, Avalon Organics markets their hair care line nationwide at Whole Food Markets, Wild Oats stores and other natural food retailers. They offer 12 different organic shampoos, including Grapefruit and Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Olive and Grapeseed and a Gentle Tear-Free Shampoo and Body Wash. Dedicated to "Consciousness in Cosmetics," Avalon professes that their products are made without phthalates, parabens or sulfates.
Aubrey Organic, headquartered in Tampa, Florida was founded in 1967 and creates all-natural shampoos for dry, normal, oily and special hair types. Aubrey's shampoos contain organic ingredients such as aloe vera and rosa mosqueta oils. Most of Aubrey's shampoos score in the low to modest hazard range at The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database website.
Conditioners
Avalon Organics offers a line of organic conditions that complement their shampoos. All of the conditioners contain moisturizing babassu oil, an emollient that comes from a wild palm tree in northeastern Brazil. Many of Avalon's conditioners contain other organic ingredients, such as chamomile and shea butter.
Aubrey also offers a full line of organic conditioners for all hair types. Island Natural Replenishing Conditioner is for dry, frizzy hair and contains organic coconut milk and shea butter, jojoba butter, chamomile and other botanical extracts. For oily, fine or limp hair, Aubrey recommends Egyptian Henna Shine-Enhancing Clean rinse with organic peppermint oil and B vitamins.
Other Hair Care Products
Holistic Serums, marketed by Katuri Inc., in Stephenville, Texas, produces Natural Hairgrow, a product that combines natural oils picked for their properties of strengthening hair and scalp, including centella or gotu kala, which may rejuvenate the scalp, Indian gooseberry, which purportedly helps darken grey hair and camellia oil, which has softening qualities.
Holistic Serums also offers Hair Repair Serum, a hair treatment that contains shea, Abysinnian jojoba and avocado oils along with essential oils of myrrh, rosemary and chamomile.
