Knox Gelatin is a gelatin product manufactured by the Kraft food company. Gelatin is made from collagen, a protein that occurs naturally in the connective tissue of mammals. Available in powder form, Knox gelatin is intended to be mixed with water before consumption. Tasteless and odorless on its own, gelatin is widely known as the main ingredient in the dessert Jell-O. In addition to its use in desserts, gelatin has numerous benefits as a dietary supplement.
Joint Pain Relief
Knox gelatin is often used as a supplement to alleviate joint pain and arthritis. According to the Ball State University News Center, athletes suffering from knee pain reported a reduction in pain following eight weeks of gelatin supplementation versus a placebo group. Although expensive arthritis supplements often include gelatin, you can get the same positive effects for less money by taking an all-purpose form of gelatin such as Knox gelatin. To take it as a supplement, you can simply mix it with water and drink it.
Weight Loss
Although Knox gelatin is not intended to be a weight loss supplement or fat burner, its thick texture and mouth feel make it an important inclusion in a weight loss plan. You can add Knox gelatin to low-calorie desserts, puddings or health shakes to improve their texture without adding fat or calories. After you mix it with water and refrigerate, Knox gelatin assumes a semi-solid state that can increase feelings of fullness and help you fight hunger. Gelatin is also a source of protein and may fight muscle wasting during dieting.
Bone Health
Knox gelatin may play a role in maintaining bone health, specifically in fighting the effects of osteoporosis. According to food scientist and gelatin researcher Dr. Bernard Cole, gelatin supplementation may reduce the degradation of collagen in bones, slowing the progression of osteoporosis. Dr. Cole theorizes that during gelatin supplementation, the enzymes normally responsible for damaging bone collagen instead degrade the collagen in the gelatin.
