Caffeine is a stimulant that occurs naturally in coffee, tea and cocoa. It also is a common additive in many soft drinks. The diet versions of many popular sodas are lower in calories and sugar than regular sodas, but the caffeine content is usually about the same. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that a caffeine content of about 72 milligrams is generally recognized as safe for a 12-oz. soft drink.

Vault Zero

Vault Zero is among the diet drinks with the highest levels of caffeine. There are about 71 mg of caffeine in a 12-ounce can of this citrus-flavored drink. Vault, which is manufactured by The Coca-Cola Co., is sometimes referred to as a hybrid drink because it's a combination soft drink and energy drink.

Diet Mountain Dew

Diet Mountain Dew MDX is another chart-topper when it comes to caffeine. This version of the soft drink has 71 mg of caffeine in a 12-oz serving. Diet Mountain Dew has 54 mg of caffeine.

Diet Coke

Coca-Cola's well-known Diet Coke soft drink has approximately 47 mg of caffeine in a 12-oz. serving. Diet Coke with Lime has the same amount of caffeine. For comparison sake, the American Beverage Association reports that a 12-oz. cup of coffee has between 156 and 288 mgs of caffeine.

Tab

Tab, which was one of the first diet colas, is another product of The Coca-Cola Co. Like Diet Coke, a 12-oz. can contains 47 mg of caffeine. If you choose to drink tea instead, you could get an average of anywhere from 30 mg to 135 mg of caffeine.

Diet Dr Pepper

Diet Dr Pepper ranks a little below Diet Coke when it comes to caffeine. If you drink a 12-oz. can of Diet Dr Pepper, you'll be getting 44 mg of caffeine, slightly more than you would get in a can of regular Dr Pepper.

Diet Pepsi

Diet Coke's rival, Diet Pepsi, has less caffeine. A 12-oz. can contains about 38 mg of caffeine. Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi has the same 38 mg. A Diet Pepsi Twist has slightly less caffeine at 36mg per 12-oz. can.

No Caffeine

If you're trying to avoid caffeine, there are a number of diet drink options. Sip a can of Diet Sprite or Diet 7Up. Try some Diet Mug Root Beer or a Barq's Diet Root Beer. Fanta, Fresca and Sierra Mist are other no-caffeine alternatives.
