Many kids are picky eaters and may discourage eating healthy. Vitamins, minerals and other supplements are a great way to provide them with the nutritional needs their bodies require. There is a variety of vitamins that kids can take that will help their body to grow and function properly.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is not stored in your body, meaning you need to have an adequate supply of it in your diet. Kids need vitamin C as it assists the body in the production of collagen, an important protein that is used to make skin, ligaments and blood vessels. Also, vitamin C contains antioxidant properties, which makes it an efficient vitamin to help fight off damage that may be the result of free-radicals. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits like oranges and juices. Boys need around 75mg of vitamin C a day and girls need around 65mg.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps the body to maintain a normal blood and calcium level. Vitamin D also contributes to the formation and maintenance of bones. The sun contributes to providing your body with vitamin D and as little as 10 minutes exposure to the sun may reduce the chances of a deficiency. According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin D may also help to provide protection to a number of diseases such as high blood pressure and cancer. A deficiency in vitamin D may cause rickets in kids. Good sources of vitamin D include fish and eggs. Kids Health says that kids should get at least 400 IU of vitamin D in foods or supplement form everyday.
Vitamin H (Biotin)
Vitamin H, also referred to as biotin, is an important B vitamin that is needed to help keep skin, eyes and hair healthy. Vitamin H helps to the body turn carbohydrates into glucose, providing the body with energy, which is important for kids as many are active. Also, vitamin H helps to improve hair and nails that are dry, brittle or thin. A lack of vitamin H may cause dry scaly skin and hair loss. Good sources of vitamin H include cooked eggs and soybeans. Children should get between 8 to 12 mcg of this vitamin daily.
