Dark skin on the body is commonly caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight over years. Sudden dark skin, or spots, should be checked by a doctor to rule out serious medical issues, according to Mayo Clinic. But there are some treatments that can help get rid of dark skin that do not require medical attention, according to Susan E. Worwood, author of "Essential Aromatherapy: A Pocket Guide to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," and Marcel Lavabre, author of "Aromatherapy Workbook."
Natural Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil Treatment
Step 1
Combine ½ tsp. bergamot essential oil, ½ tsp. tea tree essential oil, ½ tsp. lemon essential oil, ½ tsp. cade essential oil, ¼ tsp. white camphor essential oil, ¼ tsp. myrrh essential oil, ¼ tsp. spike lavender essential oil and ¾ cup jojoba oil in a small bottle with tight fitting top.
Step 2
Cover the bottle and shake it gently for 15 to 20 seconds to combine the essential oils and jojoba oil.
Step 3
Massage a small amount of the essential oil mixture onto the area of the thighs being treated. Leave the oil on the skin for 10 to 12 minutes.
Step 4
Wash the area of skin just treated with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel and apply a light moisturizer.
Step 5
Apply this treatment once per day in the evening only. Stop using the mixture if it causes redness, dry skin or other irritation.
Step 6
Store unused portions of the essential oil mixture in the refrigerator for 60 days. Discard the mixture after 60 days have passed if you have not used at all.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not go in the sun for 2 to 3 hours after using this treatment. Exposing essential oil mixtures to UV light that contain citrus oils can cause severe irritation.
