There are many reasons why you may have dark circles under your eyes. The most common reasons are sun exposure, unhealthy habits, thinning skin and hereditary factors. As you age you are more likely to have dark circles under your eyes. Red eye occurs when the blood vessels in the eye get enlarged and become more prominent. Chronic red eye can occur if you are exposed certain elements such as dust, sun exposure, an infection that does not heal or exposure to a foreign object.
Dark Circles Treatment
Step 1
Get extra sleep at night by going to bed an hour earlier than usual. Lack of sleep can make your skin look paler, which exposes the blood vessels under your eyes. More sleep gives your skin a fuller and healthier appearance.
Step 2
Apply a cold bag of peas or ice wrapped in some cloth to the dark circles under your eyes. Keep it applied to your eyes for around 15 to 20 minutes. The cold pressure will help reduce swelling and discoloration of your eyes.
Step 3
Wear sunglasses and put on extra sunscreen when you go out during the day. The sun stimulates your skin to produce extra pigmentation, which can cause dark circles around your eyes. The sunscreen will help protect your skin from the sun's UV rays and help moisturize the upper layers of your skin.
Chronic Red Eye Treatment
Step 1
Identify anything that you could possibly cause you allergies and give you puffy, red eyes. Test different things by isolating different objects or foods near you to see if you have an allergic reaction.
Step 2
Do not use any make up or eye wear such as contact lenses while your eyes are still red. The infection can linger in your eye longer if you keep other objects near or around your eye while it is red.
Step 3
Apply a warm compression to your eyes for at least five minutes two times a day. This will help heal the swelling of your eye or eyes. It will also help reduce your chances of contracting red eye again by destroying the bacteria in the eye.
Step 4
Wash your hands and face periodically throughout the day when one of your eyes is red. This will help stop the spread of bacteria from eye to eye or to other parts of your body.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to help flush out the toxins in your body.
- Consult your doctor if your eyes do not improve after a couple of days.
