Some men genetically grow facial hair slower than other men. While genetics will also play a role, there are several lifestyle measures and additions to your diet that you can make that will stimulate your facial hair follicles and maximize your facial hair growth. According to Dr. Jeffery Benabio, a member of American Academy of Dermatology, growing out your facial hair will take at least four weeks.
Step 1
Don't shave or trim your facial hair for at least four weeks. According to Benabio, shaving will not make your facial hair grow faster.
Step 2
Eat protein as part of a balanced diet. Since hair is made from protein, your body will need dietary protein support to maximize your facial hair growth. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you get at least 10 to 35 percent of your calories from protein. Aim for a higher percentage of protein to maximize your hair growth.
Step 3
Shampoo your facial hair two or three times a week. Benabio suggests using a dandruff shampoo. A shampoo that has caffeine as an ingredient can also stimulate your hair growth, according to a 2006 German university study. Massaging the shampoo into your skin will stimulate the follicles and help prevent itching that you otherwise may experience.
Step 4
Take a biotin supplement. Benabio also suggests taking a biotin supplement. A dose of 2.5mg per day is suggested. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that biotin is linked to improved hair growth.
Step 5
Trim your facial hair after four to six weeks. While trimming doesn't make your facial hair grow faster, it does prevent split ends that can damage the shafts of your hair.
Tips and Warnings
- Other than a biotin supplement, only a multivitamin is recommended. Nutritional deficiencies can hinder hair growth, but a multivitamin and a balanced diet with protein should supply all of the vitamins and minerals you need to optimize your hair growth. Avoid special "hair growth" dietary supplements.
- Do not attempt to use topical minoxidil on your face. Minoxidil, or Rogaine, is FDA-approved only for use on the scalp. Accidentally ingesting minoxidil can cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure.
