Arteriosclerosis

Erectile dysfunction, also known as "impotence," is a condition where you are unable to maintain an erection long enough to complete a sexual experience. This can take place from both physical and psychological factors. Arteriosclerosis is an example of a physical factor. With this condition, the arteries become hard due to a buildup of plaque. This, in turn, restricts blood flow to the body. In order to achieve an erection, the penis fills up with blood. If you have arteriosclerosis, the penis will not be able to get a sufficient supply of blood, and erectile dysfunction can occur.

Diabetes

When carbohydrates are consumed, they get converted to glucose and your blood sugar levels elevate. Insulin is then released from your pancreas to stabilize these levels. Diabetes is a condition where your pancreas does not release enough insulin or it does not release any insulin at all. This disease can cause nerve damage to the extremities, including the penis. As a result, you can develop erectile dysfunction.

Drugs

Pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed by your doctor to reduce symptoms of a disease or condition. They might be effective at doing that, but they might have side effects such as erectile dysfunction. Examples include tranquilizers, antidepressants, blood pressure pills, sedatives and antihistamines. If you regularly use illicit drugs like marijuana, you can also suffer erectile dysfunction.

Smoking

Smoking is already known for its detrimental effects on the lungs. But it can also lead to impotence. This is because blood vessels can become constricted and blood flow can be compromised. According to the Mayo Clinic, men who smoke cigarettes are much more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than nonsmoking men.

Emotions

In order to achieve an erection, you must first be aroused mentally. If you suffer from a number of psychological factors like depression, stress, guilt, anxiety, fear or excessive worrying, you can develop a low libido and erectile dysfunction.

Injury

Any type of injury you sustain to the muscles or nerves near the penis can cause erectile dysfunction. This can take place from prostate or bladder surgery, spinal cord damage, or an accident injury.
