Healthy Breakfast Ideas for Preschool Kids

Eating breakfast while getting kids out the door to preschool may be difficult for some parents. Making breakfast healthy and adding variation may simply take a few new recipe ideas. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, or USDA, breakfast is vital part of the day. The USDA states children who eat breakfast have better levels of concentration are less likely to be overweight and establish healthy habits for adulthood.

Fruits and Vegetables

According to the USDA's MyPyramid, children should receive 1½ cups of juice and 2½ cups of vegetables each day. Fresh fruits such as blueberries, strawberries and bananas added to yogurt or cereal allow youngster to have a jump start on daily requirements. Slices of fruit and nuts added to oatmeal allows a preschooler to create his own "smiley face" breakfast. Mashed bananas added to pancake and waffle recipes add a quick dose of extra potassium. Vegetables added in small amounts to eggs dishes such as omelets and scrambled eggs are a fast way to get healthy vitamins into the mix. Better Homes and Gardens suggests using egg whites and reduced-fat cheese for an extra healthy egg dish.

Yogurt Creations

A variety of ingredients can be mixed quickly in a blender to create a breakfast smoothie on the go. Low-fat yogurt, fruit and a bit of honey creates a treat children will enjoy for breakfast. Create layered breakfast parfaits with yogurt and fruit. Clear glasses should be used so the children see all the individual layers. Children may even want to help create the parfait's for a fun morning activity. Granola added to the top of the parfait adds a bit of crunch and extra nutrition, states Better Homes and Gardens.

Banana Breakfast Dog

KidsHealth suggests creating a banana breakfast dog for a weird but yummy treat. Whole wheat bread is used for the bun. Peanut butter is spread onto the bread. A peeled banana is added to the "bun." A bit more peanut butter is added to the top of the banana, and raisins attached as "condiments." Additional fruit such as strawberries or raspberries may be added for extra taste.

Cottage Cheese Mix

Cottage cheese is high in protein and a good source of calcium. Jelly or honey mixed with cottage cheese makes a healthy and sweet breakfast treat. Fruits such as peach and kiwi slices add color and variation to a child's diet.
