Symptoms of swine flu, or H1N1, include cough, sore throat, fatigue, chills, body aches and headaches. Only your doctor can make a definitive diagnosis. There are ways to decrease the likelihood of catching this illness, but if you do get it, it's important to rest, drink plenty of fluids, ask your doctor about medications, and stay home until you are better to avoid spreading swine flu to others.

Step 1

Wash your hands with soap and water often -- before and after eating, after sneezing or using the bathroom and after contact with sick people. Carry hand sanitizer that is alcohol-based for times when soap and water is not available.

Step 2

Refrain from touching your eyes, mouth and nose. This will help you avoid catching and spreading swine flu germs.

Step 3

Keep a minimum of 6 feet between you and anyone who is exhibiting flu symptoms.

Step 4

Listen to a local radio or television station for recommendations in your area as far as any school closings due to swine flu or suggestions about avoiding group gatherings, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Step 5

Take care of yourself. This means eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, getting enough rest and exercising.

Step 6

Sit near an open window if possible when traveling, such as by car or bus, recommends KidsHealth. This will hopefully keep you from being cooped up with other people's germs.
