Heat exhaustion is one of three serious heat-related health issues: more dangerous than heat cramps but not as severe as heat stroke. Strenuous exercise, high humidity and high temperatures can all lead to heat exhaustion. Consuming water and vitamin C and replacing electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium can help prevent or relieve the symptoms of heat exhaustion.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are minerals in your body's fluids that keep your muscles working. When you sweat, you lose water and vital minerals. To keep your body chemistry in balance, you must replace the sodium, potassium and magnesium as well as the water lost during heat exhaustion. Coconut water or sports drinks can help, but they may be high in sugar, so dilute them with water.
Vitamin C
Taking up to 100mg of vitamin C or ascorbic acid may actually prevent heat exhaustion. It is recommended to get your vitamin C from a food source, such as fresh-squeezed juice, rather than from a supplement.
Calcium
Calcium is lost through excessive sweating and must be replaced. Dark, leafy, green vegetables are an excellent source of calcium and have a high water content, which will help with rehydration.
Herbal Remedies
Replacing the water, vitamins and minerals lost during heat exhaustion is important for recovery. There are a few herbal remedies that may also help lower your body temperature. Make a tea with warm water and cayenne pepper to lower body temperature by stimulating your sweat glands with capsaicin. Lavender also induces sweating and can help lower your core temperature.
