Scabies, or body lice, is a contagious skin disease caused by burrowing mites that live on human skin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the proteins and feces of these parasites cause allergic reactions leading to itching and rashes. Medications containing chemicals to kill the mites and their eggs are commonly proscribed, though the itching may persist for some time after treatment. Home remedies, however, can help relieve the bothersome symptoms.
Lotions and Creams
Lotions and creams formulated to relieve itching may help reduce the irritation caused by a scabies rash. Family Doctor.org reports that a low dose hydrocortisone steroid cream can be used for a week on itchy skin. People should not use these creams for longer than two weeks, however, and should not apply them to the face or genital area. In addition, MayoClinic.com recommends Calamine lotion, which is available over the counter.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines are effective at reducing irritation caused by a scabies rash as they prevent histamines from causing allergic reactions to irritants. Found over the counter, these medications are generally safe for healthy adults, though some people experience drowsiness, impaired thinking, abdominal pain and headaches. Family Doctor.org reports that people with breathing problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, or other health conditions should talk to their doctor or pharmacist before using certain types of antihistamines.
Bathing and Cool Compresses
A cool compress is a simple home remedy for itching skin. Applying a damp washcloth to affected skin may help reduce itching and possible damage to the skin caused by scratching. For whole-body relief, a person can soak in either warm or cool water and then apply an anti-itch cream immediately after bathing and while the pores are still open.
