Breakfast has long been considered the most important meal of the day. But when you don't have time to cook or prepare, cereal is often an easy alternative to get your day started. It's important to keep your eye out for overly sugary cereals that provide little in the way of nutritional value. For 70 years, according to their website, people have eaten General Mills' Kix cereal.
Calories
Kix's recommended serving size is 1 1/4 cups or 30 g. Nutritional information is provided for Kix served with and without 1/2 cup of skim milk. The cereal itself contains 110 calories, 5 of which are from fat. Adding milk contributes an additional 40 calories and 5 calories from fat, bringing the total to 150 and 10 respectively.
Sugars
It's important to keep an eye on sugars in cereals. Sugar and brown sugar are the third and sixth ingredients in Kix. According to WebMD, the U.S. Government's Dietary Reference Intakes recommends "added sugars not exceed 25 percent of total calories." With 3 g of sugar and 110 calories, Kix's sugars account for 10.9 percent of the cereal's calories. Adding milk contributes an additional 6 g of sugar.
Carbohydrates
A serving of Kix contains 8 percent or 25 g of your daily carbohydrates, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. There are 3 g of dietary fiber in Kix, which is 11 percent of your daily value. Three grams of sugar and 19 g of other carbohydrates comprise the balance of the cereal's total carbohydrates. Served with milk, Kix would be 10 percent of your daily carbohydrates because of the milk's added sugar.
Fat, Cholesterol and Protein
There is 1 g of total fat in Kix, making up 1 percent daily value. There are no saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated or trans fats in the cereal. Kix is cholesterol-free and, served with milk, contains less than 5 mg. A bowl of Kix and milk contains 6 total g of protein, 2 from cereal and 4 from milk.
Other Facts
A serving of Kix and skim milk has 250 mg of sodium and 260 mg of potassium, 11 and 8 percent daily value respectively. Kix is also a source of vitamins and minerals. Ten percent daily values of vitamins A, C and D are available in just the cereal. Likewise, Kix contains 15 percent of your calcium, 45 percent of your iron and 50 percent of your folic acid for the day. It also contains 25 percent of thiamine, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12 and zinc.
