It is possible to remove buildup of ear wax at home with over-the-counter kits. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the common method of cleaning the ears with cotton swabs only pushes the wax in further. If too much wax builds up in the ears, it can cause earache, partial hearing loss and ringing in the ears. Less serious concerns include itching and odor. Home wax removal kits use special drops to soften the wax and a bulb syringe to irrigate the ear canal.
Step 1
Lie on your side and place five to 10 drops of the wax softener solution into your ear. Do not allow the tip of the bottle to touch the ear.
Step 2
Remain on your side for 10 minutes while the solution softens the ear wax.
Step 3
Fill the bulb syringe with warm water by turning on the faucet, placing the tip of the syringe in the stream, and squeezing several times.
Step 4
Insert the tip of the syringe just inside the ear without forcing it into the ear canal. You do not want to impede the flow of water coming out of the ear.
Step 5
Tilt your head over the sink and squeeze the syringe to squirt water into the ear and remove the softened wax.
Step 6
Repeat the process with the other ear. According to Murine.com, you can repeat the process twice daily for up to four days.
